The
Hall, 42, previously served as the Panthers' assistant defensive backs coach from 2023 to 2024. His return follows the recent departures of defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley. With 10 games left in the 2026 campaign, the franchise is turning to a familiar face to help navigate a challenging period for the team's secondary.
Reuniting with the Defensive Staff
This appointment sees Hall reunite with interim defensive coordinator
The coaching change arrives at a critical juncture for the Panthers' defense, which is currently managing a severe injury crisis among its cornerbacks. The team is navigating the 2026 season with several key contributors sidelined, including starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn, who is dealing with a quad injury, and Mike Jackson, who is out with a groin issue. Additionally, special teams contributor Akayleb Evans remains on injured reserve with a triceps injury.
Addressing Depth Concerns
The depth at the cornerback position has been further tested by recent physical setbacks. Rookie Will Lee III, who had been filling in as a starter, sustained a hamstring injury during the team’s recent loss to the Green Bay Packers. As the squad prepares for Week 9, the active 53-man roster is left with limited healthy options, specifically Chau Smith-Wade and Malcolm DeWalt, the latter of whom was recently promoted from the practice squad.
In response to these personnel shortages, the team has been forced to rely on various roster maneuvers, including the recent elevation of Marco Wilson from the practice squad for the game against Green Bay. The organization also maintains a group of defensive backs on the practice squad, including Zion Childress, DeVonta Smith, Corey Thornton, Robert Rochell, and Caelan Carson, as they look to solidify their defensive rotation for the remainder of the season.
