FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — As the New England Patriots gear up for the upcoming NFL season, starting left tackle Will Campbell is focusing on personal growth and recovery after a challenging rookie year. Campbell, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2025 draft, has taken to heart the advice of veteran offensive tackle Lane Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles. "Lane told me, 'You have to be very honest with yourself about the season,'" Campbell shared. He reflected on his performance prior to an injury in late November, acknowledging that he did not play to his potential afterward. "After the season, I was just worried about getting healthy and building my strength back," he added, emphasizing his commitment to being ready for spring practices.

Since the Patriots' Super Bowl LX defeat to the Seattle Seahawks, Campbell has faced intense scrutiny, particularly with the team's selection of Utah offensive tackle Caleb Lomu in the first round of the 2026 draft. Despite speculation about a potential position change, Campbell has solidified his role as the protector of quarterback Drake Maye's blindside during training camp. His preparation included a week spent with Johnson, along with other elite offensive linemen, where he gained invaluable insights into the game. "It was not only being able to hang out, but seeing how they work," Campbell noted, expressing gratitude for the mentorship he received.

Maye's Preseason Status

Another focal point for the Patriots is quarterback Drake Maye, who has yet to see action in the preseason. Coach Mike Vrabel has indicated that Maye's practice sessions against the Indianapolis Colts and Eagles have provided him with essential experience. However, with the regular-season opener against Seattle approaching on September 9, the question remains whether Maye will participate in the preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns. "If that means playing Thursday as part of preparation, then that is what we will do," Vrabel stated, highlighting the need to keep key players healthy.

Injury Concerns and Roster Updates

The Patriots' offensive line depth has been tested this preseason, with injuries impacting several players. In a recent game against the Eagles, offensive tackle Marcus Bryant suffered an ankle injury, raising concerns about the team's depth. This follows injuries to backup center/guards Ben Brown and Andrew Rupcich, who are expected to be sidelined for several weeks. Meanwhile, cornerback Christian Gonzalez's contract extension remains a topic of discussion, as he has not practiced since August 10 due to an injury. Patriots executive vice president Eliot Wolf expressed the team's desire to retain Gonzalez, stating, "Christian is a tremendous player that we've been on record multiple times saying we want him to be here."

As the Patriots continue their preparations, the focus remains on building a cohesive team ready to tackle the challenges of the upcoming season.
