Tampa Bay Buccaneers All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. is set to miss up to a month of action after sustaining a rib injury during the team's recent loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. sidelined with rib fracture

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be without the services of All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. for the immediate future. Head coach Todd Bowles confirmed on Monday that the defensive standout has sustained a slight rib fracture, an injury that is expected to keep him sidelined for a period of two to four weeks.

The news comes as a significant blow to the Buccaneers, who are currently navigating a difficult start to their season following a 17-14 defeat to the Green Bay Packers. Winfield’s absence will be felt immediately, with the team preparing for a short turnaround ahead of their upcoming Thursday night clash against the Dallas Cowboys.

Defensive adjustments and injury timeline

Addressing the media, Bowles provided clarity on the team's defensive plans in the wake of the injury. With Winfield unavailable for the Thursday night fixture, the coaching staff has turned to Ifeatu Melifonwu to step into the starting lineup. Melifonwu, who had been elevated from the practice squad for three consecutive weeks, has now been officially signed to the active roster to fill the void.

The injury occurred during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Packers. With under five minutes remaining, Winfield blitzed off the edge, engaging with Packers right tackle Anthony Belton before attempting to deflect a pass from quarterback Jordan Love. While the exact moment of the injury remains unclear, Winfield was seen walking off the field with visible discomfort, requiring assistance from the training staff. His condition appeared to worsen following the conclusion of the game, as he was observed moving with significant difficulty while exiting the locker room.

Impact on the Buccaneers roster

Despite the physical setback, Winfield had been a productive presence on the field during the loss to Green Bay. He recorded six tackles, tying for the second-highest total on the team, and was involved in two separate plays where fumble recoveries were ultimately overturned by officiating reviews. His absence leaves a notable gap in the secondary as the team looks to rebound from an 0-4 start to the season.

Beyond the situation with Winfield, the Buccaneers' medical staff is also monitoring the status of inside linebacker SirVocea Dennis. Coach Bowles noted that the team is currently awaiting the results of further imaging on a foot injury sustained by Dennis during the same contest against the Packers. The status of both players remains a focal point for the team as they prepare for their upcoming schedule.
