Broncos Cornerback Pat Surtain II Exits Game Against 49ers with Ankle Injury

Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II, a cornerstone of the team's defensive strategy, was forced to leave Sunday's contest against the San Francisco 49ers due to a lower right leg injury. The veteran defensive back exited the field shortly before halftime, dealing a significant blow to the Broncos' secondary.

The incident occurred with 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter during a first-and-10 play from the 49ers' 42-yard line. As quarterback Brock Purdy completed a short pass to Christian McCaffrey, Surtain was observed pivoting in coverage away from the ball. He immediately began hopping on his left foot, keeping his right foot elevated, before collapsing to the turf while clutching his ankle. Medical personnel attended to him on the field before assisting him to the locker room, with staff members supporting him on either side.

Impact on Denver's Defensive Rotation

The Broncos officially classified the issue as an ankle injury and initially listed his return as questionable, though he did not reappear for the second half. Surtain, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, two-time first-team All-Pro, and the 2024 Defensive Player of the Year, serves as the primary focal point for defensive coordinator Vance Joseph’s weekly game plans. His absence forced an immediate shift in the team's defensive personnel.

In the wake of his departure, rookie Jahdae Barron, the team's 2025 first-round draft pick, stepped into the lineup to fill the void. The secondary faced further complications as the second half commenced, with Riley Moss also absent from the field. The team confirmed that Moss was dealing with a rib injury, an issue that had previously sidelined him during the preseason. Consequently, Kris Abrams-Draine took over the other cornerback position to start the second half, as both Surtain and Moss remained off the sideline.
