Bill Belichick Named Among Five Finalists for Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2027

Bill Belichick has once again been named as one of the five finalists in the coaching category for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The announcement, made Thursday by the Canton-based institution, places the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach in contention for the Class of 2027 alongside four other notable figures: Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves, and Mike Shanahan.

The five candidates were selected by the Hall of Fame’s coaching subcommittee, which narrowed down an initial field of 14 nominees. This group will now undergo further evaluation, with the subcommittee tasked with selecting a single candidate to move forward for final consideration. The full selection committee will determine the final class of enshrinees early next year, with the official announcement scheduled for the NFL Honors ceremony in Los Angeles this February.

A Competitive Field of Coaching Legends

All five finalists reached this stage of the process last year. Despite his extensive resume, which includes six Super Bowl titles with the New England Patriots and two additional championships as a defensive assistant with the New York Giants, Belichick was not elected during his first year of eligibility. His exclusion sparked significant debate across the league, with former quarterback Tom Brady publicly questioning the decision, noting that if Belichick were not a first-ballot selection, the criteria for coaches would be difficult to justify.

The remaining candidates bring their own significant legacies to the table. Tom Coughlin, who finished his career with a 182-157 record across 20 seasons with the New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars, famously defeated Belichick’s Patriots in two Super Bowls. Mike Holmgren, who spent 17 seasons leading the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, compiled a 174-122 record and secured a Super Bowl title in Green Bay. Dan Reeves, who coached for 23 seasons with the Denver Broncos, New York Giants, and Atlanta Falcons, finished with a 201-174-2 record and made four Super Bowl appearances. Mike Shanahan, meanwhile, led the Denver Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl victories and finished his 20-season career with a 178-144 record.

The Path to Enshrinement

The selection process for the Class of 2027 is rigorous. The final ballot will consist of 15 candidates, comprising one contributor, one coach, and 13 modern-era players. This list will be whittled down to 10 and then seven finalists. To earn induction, candidates must receive at least 80% support from a 25-person selection committee. The Hall of Fame anticipates that this process will result in the induction of three to seven new members.

In addition to the coaching finalists, the Hall of Fame recently announced the five contributors who have advanced in the process: Ralph Hay, Robert Kraft, Virginia McCaskey, Doug Williams, and John Wooten. The final group of inductees will be enshrined in Canton next August.
