Quarterback Depth and Future Outlook
The Falcons' quarterback situation remains fluid as they navigate early-season injuries.
Despite speculation regarding Tagovailoa’s future in Atlanta, sources indicate the team has no immediate plans to move on from the veteran. Tagovailoa, who signed a one-year deal worth $1.2 million, remains a valuable asset for the roster. If he returns to the field and performs well, the Falcons could potentially explore trade options before the November 10 deadline.
In the interim, Cooper Rush is set to make his second consecutive start against the Panthers this Sunday. Rush struggled in the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, completing 12 of 22 passes for 143 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, resulting in a league-low QBR of 2.6. Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that undrafted rookie Jack Strand will serve as the backup for the upcoming game.
Should either Penix or Tagovailoa be unable to suit up for the Thursday night game, they will benefit from an extended recovery period. The Falcons' subsequent fixture is scheduled for Monday, October 5, against the New Orleans Saints, providing additional time for the quarterback group to reach full health.
