Cardinals rookie Jeremiyah Love placed on IR with high ankle sprain

The Arizona Cardinals have placed rookie running back Jeremiyah Love on injured reserve following a high ankle sprain sustained during Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys. The injury is expected to keep the first-round draft pick sidelined for a period of four to five weeks.

Love, who was selected third overall in this year's NFL draft, exited the contest during the first half. After appearing visibly frustrated on the sideline, the former Notre Dame standout was evaluated by medical staff in the blue injury tent before heading to the locker room. He did not return to the game.

Injury setbacks impact rookie campaign

This latest development marks another hurdle in what has been an injury-interrupted debut season for the running back. Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur confirmed on Monday that the current injury is distinct from the ankle issues Love dealt with earlier in the year, which included separate sprains to both ankles during the preseason and the early weeks of the regular season.

Addressing the nature of the injury, LaFleur noted that the damage affects a different area of the ankle compared to his previous ailments. Despite the recurring physical challenges, Love has managed to accumulate 268 rushing yards and one touchdown across six appearances this season.

Allgeier steps up in backfield

Following Love's departure on Sunday, veteran Tyler Allgeier assumed the primary responsibilities in the Cardinals' backfield. Allgeier delivered a significant performance, recording 191 yards from scrimmage and scoring two touchdowns to help secure an overtime victory for Arizona against Dallas.

By moving to injured reserve, Love is mandated to sit out for a minimum of four weeks, leaving the Cardinals to rely on their depth at the position as they navigate the upcoming stretch of their schedule.
