Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski ruled out for season opener against Lakers

The Golden State Warriors have confirmed that starting guard Brandin Podziemski will be unavailable for their highly anticipated season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night. The 23-year-old, who has established himself as a key rotation piece, was officially ruled out after missing three consecutive days of practice due to persistent lower back soreness.

The absence of Podziemski comes as a notable setback for the Warriors, particularly given his reputation for reliability. Last season, he was one of only 18 players across the entire NBA to feature in all 82 regular-season games. Currently entering his fourth year in the league, the guard recently secured his long-term future with the franchise by signing a five-year, $110 million contract extension that is set to take effect next season.

Injury updates for Warriors and Lakers

While Podziemski remains sidelined, there is more positive news regarding Stephen Curry. The star guard had sparked concern after suffering an injury scare during an open scrimmage on Sunday night, leading to an official listing of probable with right ankle soreness. However, Curry has returned to practice this week and is expected to suit up for the clash in Los Angeles, with projections suggesting he will log between 28 and 32 minutes of action.

The Warriors are managing a depleted roster as they begin their campaign. The team is already set to be without starting wings Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody, both of whom are facing a recovery period of several months following serious knee injuries. Additionally, projected starting center Kristaps Porzingis remains out indefinitely as he addresses a private health matter.

In contrast, the Los Angeles Lakers head into the matchup in a stronger position regarding player availability. The team has cleared offseason acquisition Walker Kessler to start at center, following his recovery from a finger injury sustained during the preseason. While reserve guard Collin Sexton remains questionable due to a soleus strain, and both rookie Cameron Carr and backup wing Adou Thiero have been ruled out, the remainder of the Lakers' roster is available for selection.
