Knicks Commemorate NBA Cup Success with Madison Square Garden Banner

The New York Knicks marked a significant moment at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, officially raising a banner to commemorate their NBA Cup title from last season. The ceremony took place ahead of the team's season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers, serving as a dual celebration alongside the unveiling of their championship banner.

This decision represents a notable change in direction for the franchise. When the Knicks initially secured the inaugural in-season tournament title last December, they opted against hanging a banner, stating at the time that their focus remained on pursuing larger objectives. That ambition was ultimately realized when the team defeated the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, securing the franchise's first championship since 1973.

A Recognition of the Journey

The NBA Cup banner, which was also earned by defeating the San Antonio Spurs in the tournament final, was installed at the arena following the Philadelphia 76ers' morning shootaround. The addition marks the first time a banner has been raised at Madison Square Garden for the Knicks since the team celebrated their 2012-13 Atlantic Division title.

Reflecting on the significance of the addition, head coach Mike Brown noted that the banner serves as a tribute to the team's collective effort throughout a challenging campaign. He emphasized that the recognition is intended not only for the players who navigated the ups and downs of the season but also for the fanbase that supported them throughout the journey.
