Tensions were notably high in 2018, when President Trump stated he would not invite the eventual winners after prominent players, including Stephen Curry and LeBron James, expressed a lack of interest in attending.
Historical Precedent and Scheduling
Recent championship teams have also navigated the tradition differently. The 2025 champion Oklahoma City Thunder did not visit the White House last season, citing scheduling conflicts as the primary reason for their absence. Typically, NBA teams coordinate these visits to coincide with their scheduled road games against the Washington Wizards.
