Knicks stumble against 76ers as offensive struggles persist

The New York Knicks’ early-season struggles continued on Friday night as they fell 98-93 to the Philadelphia 76ers at the Xfinity Mobile Arena. Despite a spirited second-half comeback, the Knicks were unable to overcome a recurring pattern of slow starts and inconsistent offensive execution, dropping their record to 2-4 in the process.

The defeat, which occurred during an NBA Cup Group B contest, saw the visitors battle back from multiple 14-point deficits. However, late-game heroics from the 76ers, including key plays from Tyrese Maxey and LeBron James, ultimately stifled the Knicks' momentum and secured the win for Philadelphia.

Offensive woes and the search for consistency

Head coach Mike Brown expressed frustration with his team's shot selection and overall offensive rhythm following the loss. The Knicks struggled to find their range throughout the night, shooting just 40.7 percent from the field and 31.7 percent from beyond the arc. Brown noted that the team is currently forcing plays rather than focusing on fundamental basketball, stating that they are attempting to hit home runs when they should be focused on hitting singles.

The team’s offensive efficiency has been a point of concern throughout the opening weeks of the season. The Knicks currently rank 30th in offensive efficiency and raw scoring, a trend that persisted against Philadelphia. Guard Jalen Brunson acknowledged the difficulty, noting that the team is often hesitant when trying to make the right play and emphasized that establishing a better start to games must be the primary focus moving forward.

A test of resilience in the NBA Cup

Despite the high stakes of the NBA Cup—a tournament the Knicks won last year—Coach Brown maintained that his focus remains on the process rather than the specific opponent. He stressed the importance of playing the right way regardless of who is on the court, even as the 76ers played with noticeable energy despite the absence of Jaylen Brown due to a knee injury.

Karl-Anthony Towns, who led the Knicks with a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds, reflected on the team's fatigue and the challenge of digging out of early holes. While the Knicks managed to briefly take a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter following a tough corner three-pointer from Brunson, they could not sustain the lead. A fadeaway jumper from James and a deep three-pointer from VJ Edgecombe effectively ended the Knicks' threat, leaving the team to reflect on a night where they simply lacked the necessary magic to close out the victory.
