Over his 31-year coaching career, which included roles with the Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks, Nelson accumulated 1,335 regular-season victories. At the time of his retirement in 2010, this stood as the most wins in league history. A three-time NBA Coach of the Year—earning the award in 1983, 1985, and 1992—he remains one of only three coaches to achieve the feat, alongside Gregg Popovich and Pat Riley. Furthermore, he is one of two coaches to record at least 300 victories with three different franchises, having secured 540 wins with Milwaukee, 422 with Golden State, and 339 with Dallas.
From Player to Hall of Fame Coach
Before his coaching success, Nelson enjoyed a distinguished 14-season playing career after being drafted by the Chicago Zephyrs in 1962. He played for the Zephyrs, Los Angeles Lakers, and Boston Celtics, appearing in 1,053 regular-season games. His time in Boston was particularly decorated, as he contributed to five NBA championships between 1966 and 1976. The Celtics eventually retired his No. 19 jersey in 1978.
Nelson’s contributions to the game were further recognized in 2025 when he received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award. This honor placed him alongside former Warriors coaches Al Attles and Rick Adelman as recipients of the prestigious accolade. By wearing the 'Nellie' band throughout the upcoming season, the Warriors aim to ensure that the legacy of one of the game's most influential figures remains at the forefront of the franchise.
