India's lack of experience leads to a draw with China in the Hockey World Cup.

In a thrilling encounter at the Wagener Stadion on Sunday, India and China played to a 2-2 draw in their Women’s World Cup Pool D opener. The match showcased a stark contrast in performance between the two halves, with India initially taking control before China rallied to equalize. The game marked a significant moment for India, featuring eight players making their World Cup debuts, who brought an energetic yet inexperienced approach to the field.

India started the match with vigor, taking an early lead in the seventh minute. A well-placed pass from Neha found Navneet Kaur, who skillfully maneuvered the ball past defenders to score the opening goal. The Indian side continued to press high, creating opportunities and maintaining pressure on the Chinese defense. Deepika and Lalremsiami were particularly effective, using their agility and dribbling skills to challenge their opponents. By halftime, India had extended its lead to 2-1, thanks to Deepika’s successful conversion of a penalty corner following a dynamic run into the circle.

China's Resurgence

However, the momentum shifted in the second half as China began to dominate play. A critical foul by Indian defender Shilpi Dabas allowed China to score from a penalty stroke, leveling the match at 1-1. As the game progressed, China’s midfielder Li Hong emerged as a key player, orchestrating their attacks and effectively stifling India’s offensive efforts. In the 38th minute, Ma Ning scored with a powerful dragflick, bringing the score to 2-2 and marking China’s second equalizer of the match.

In the final quarters, China significantly outperformed India, recording 13 circle penetrations compared to India’s mere three. The Chinese team also earned four penalty corners, while India failed to secure any. Despite the pressure, Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia made several crucial saves, ensuring that India walked away with a valuable point from the match. Looking ahead, the Indian men’s team is set to face England in their next Pool D game on Monday.
