Sports Ministry Intervenes in Hockey India League Governance Amid Leadership Dispute

The Indian Sports Ministry has taken decisive action to secure the future of the Hockey India League (HIL) by forming a seven-member committee tasked with overseeing the competition's governance and financial framework. This intervention follows a period of mounting uncertainty and internal leadership disputes within Hockey India that threatened the stability of the league.

The committee is chaired by R. Vineel Krishna, the Joint Secretary for Khelo India and a former Odisha sports secretary, who will serve as the government’s primary representative. The panel includes key Hockey India officials, specifically president Dilip Tirkey, secretary general Bholanath Singh, and treasurer Sekar J. Manoharan. To ensure the interests of the participating teams are represented, the ministry has also appointed three franchise representatives: JSW Sports CEO Divyanshu Singh, SG Pipers CEO Mahesh Bhupathi, and Hyderabad Toofans owner Alok Sanghi.

Addressing Leadership Friction and Election Delays

The formation of this committee comes at a time of significant administrative tension within the national federation. Reports indicate a deepening divide between president Dilip Tirkey and other senior officials, including Bholanath Singh. The friction has manifested in conflicting claims regarding the legitimacy of recent executive board meetings, with Tirkey declaring two consecutive sessions as illegal and invalid. In response to these developments, Tirkey has reportedly filed a petition in the Delhi High Court to challenge the validity of these meetings and the subsequent decisions made during them.

Compounding the administrative instability, the Hockey India elections originally slated for November 7 have been officially postponed. While new dates have not yet been finalized, sources suggest the process may be delayed until late November or early December. This postponement is attributed to the unavailability of the appointed electoral officer, Sudhir Tripathi, and the federation’s internal requirement for a 60-day notice period. The decision to defer the vote was confirmed during an executive board meeting held on Tuesday.

Beyond the league’s governance, the federation is also navigating other internal challenges. An Indian Olympic Association (IOA) committee has commenced its inquiry into harassment allegations involving former captain Asunta Lakra. The committee held its inaugural meeting on Wednesday, though notably, former hockey player Mamta Kharab, who was appointed to the panel, did not attend the session. The Ministry’s new committee now faces the dual challenge of resolving these internal fractures while ensuring the Hockey India League remains on a sustainable path.
