Fulton laments missed opportunities as India faces elimination in Hockey World Cup.

The Indian men's hockey team faces a critical juncture in their World Cup campaign following a 3-1 defeat to co-host Netherlands on August 22, 2026. This loss has left India at the bottom of Group E, raising concerns about their chances of advancing in the tournament. Despite head coach Craig Fulton asserting that the team performed statistically better than in previous encounters against top-ranked teams, the outcome has left players and staff feeling "bitterly disappointed."

Struggles in Field Play

India's scoring woes have been evident throughout the tournament, with the team managing only three field goals, two of which were scored during their earlier victory against World No. 12 Pakistan. The team's only goal against the Netherlands came from a penalty corner, highlighting a significant gap in their field play. Senior forward Mandeep Singh, who has yet to score in the tournament, expressed frustration over missed opportunities. "We played a good game with a good game plan. I thought we needed to score a goal in the first half. We created one or two really good chances but it wasn’t to be," Fulton remarked after the match. He emphasized the need for better execution in the attacking circle, stating, "We just couldn’t connect enough in the D to try and get a field goal."

Despite the team's efforts, they conceded two counter-attacking goals, one of which was a result of a mistake by midfielder Manpreet Singh. However, Fulton refrained from blaming individual players, praising the overall effort and attitude of the team. "I think I can’t fault anyone’s effort and approach to doing what needed to be done today. It was a really, really tough game," he said.

Injury Concerns and Future Challenges

Adding to the team's challenges, captain Harmanpreet Singh played through a back injury, which required management during the match. After scoring India's only goal from a penalty corner, he had to leave the field for treatment, allowing the Netherlands to regain their two-goal advantage. Fulton noted, "He had a stiff back. He rested in training but it wasn’t serious. But at the same time, we have to look after the human first and make sure he’s okay."

Looking ahead, India faces a daunting task to reach the semifinals. They must secure a victory by four goals or more against Argentina in their next match, while also hoping for a Netherlands win over England. The upcoming game will be crucial for India's aspirations in the tournament, as they seek to turn their fortunes around.
