India Overcomes Resilient China in Asian Champions Trophy Encounter

India navigated a challenging tactical battle to defeat China 5-2 in their latest Asian Champions Trophy fixture. While the hosts entered the match as the stronger side, they were forced to adapt to a disciplined Chinese defensive structure that aimed to congest the midfield and disrupt India's ground game.

Head coach Craig Fulton had previously noted the difficulty of preparing for an opponent with an unknown tactical setup. China’s strategy of forcing India to play aerial balls and defending deep proved effective for long stretches, requiring the Indian squad to rely on their experience and composure to break down the opposition's resistance.

Tactical Adjustments and Scoring Breakthroughs

The deadlock was broken in the 12th minute when Jugraj Singh delivered a precise aerial pass from the 25-yard line. Sukhjeet Singh controlled the ball inside the circle and fired a powerful shot past Chinese goalkeeper Huanyu Wu to open the scoring. Despite India's pressure, China remained competitive and equalized in the 26th minute through a penalty corner conversion by Yang Peng.

India responded immediately, with captain Harmanpreet Singh converting a penalty corner shortly after Mandeep Singh drew a foul on a counterattack. The match turned decisively in India's favor shortly after halftime. Maintaining sustained pressure—an area Fulton had identified as a previous weakness—India struck twice in the first four minutes of the second half. Sukhjeet Singh netted his second goal, and Harmanpreet Singh added another from a penalty corner to extend the lead to 4-1.

Closing Out the Victory

China managed to pull one back in the 36th minute when Chen Chongcong converted a penalty corner to make it 4-2. However, India regained control, and Jugraj Singh rounded off the scoring with a penalty corner strike in the 47th minute to seal the 5-2 win. The performance highlighted India’s improved ability to rotate the ball through the midfield and stretch the opposition's defensive lines.

In other tournament action, Malaysia defeated Korea 3-1, while Japan secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Bangladesh. India will look to carry this momentum forward as the Asian Champions Trophy continues.
