BPCL edges Malaysia to close in on Murugappa Gold Cup semifinals

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) moved a step closer to the semifinals of the 97th All-India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory against the Malaysia junior team on Monday. The match, held at the SDAT Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, saw BPCL maintain their perfect record in the tournament with a third straight win.

The result leaves the Malaysian side struggling to find their rhythm following a demanding schedule. Having clinched the Sultan of Johor Cup in Johor Bahru only on Saturday night, the team arrived in Chennai on Sunday, and the lack of recovery time appeared to impact their performance throughout the contest.

BPCL dominance and missed opportunities

The decisive moment of the match arrived just three minutes into the opening quarter. BPCL orchestrated a clinical attacking move that began with a long aerial ball launched from near the halfway line. The pass successfully located a teammate positioned near the right post, who immediately squared the ball to Sudeep Chirmako. Positioned perfectly in front of the goal, Chirmako calmly converted the chance to put his side ahead.

Despite controlling the majority of the proceedings and launching frequent raids into the Malaysian circle, BPCL struggled to capitalize on their dominance. The team missed several opportunities to extend their lead, most notably in the 36th minute when Devindar Walmiki was unable to convert a penalty stroke, sending his effort wide of the target.

Malaysia attempted to find an equalizer as the game progressed, earning a penalty corner in the 44th minute. However, the attempt by Gunaseelan Dheeressh was thwarted by an alert BPCL defender who blocked the drag-flick. BPCL also failed to convert two late penalty corners in the final seconds of the match, though the single-goal cushion proved sufficient to secure the points.

Tournament context and other results

With this victory, BPCL has significantly bolstered its position in Pool-B as the tournament progresses toward the knockout stages. In other action from the day, the Indian Army delivered a commanding performance in Pool-A, defeating Punjab National Bank 5-2. The Army’s goals came from Dhariyashil Jadhav, Ankush, Cyril Lugun, Rohit Irengbam, and Ritendra, while Naveen Antil and Abhimanyu netted for Punjab National Bank.
