Max Verstappen rues tyre strategy after third-place finish at US Grand Prix

Max Verstappen salvaged a third-place finish at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, though the Red Bull driver was left frustrated by a strategic miscalculation regarding his tyre selection. Despite starting from the front row in second position, the four-time world champion struggled to maintain competitive pace throughout the race, ultimately falling behind the dominant Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli.

The race proved to be a challenging outing for the championship contender, who opted for two stints on soft tyres. This tactical decision forced him into a two-stop strategy that failed to yield the desired performance, leaving him unable to mount a serious challenge against the race leader. While he successfully reached the podium, Verstappen acknowledged that his final result was aided by the late deployment of the Virtual Safety Car.

Strategic setbacks and championship implications

Reflecting on the race, Verstappen expressed clear disappointment with the team's approach to the weekend. He noted that while their tyre strategy had been effective in recent outings, the setup in the United States simply did not translate into the necessary speed to compete at the front of the pack. He emphasised that the team now faces a period of analysis to understand why the chosen compounds performed poorly under race conditions.

The victory for Kimi Antonelli further solidified the young Mercedes driver's grip on the world championship. With this result, Antonelli now requires only two points at the upcoming Mexico Grand Prix to secure the title and become the youngest champion in Formula 1 history. For Verstappen, the weekend marked a difficult conclusion to his slim hopes of securing a fifth world championship title, effectively ending his pursuit for the season.

Despite the frustration of the day, the result continues a consistent run of form for Verstappen during the second half of the season, following his recent victories in Malaysia and Singapore. While the US Grand Prix did not go to plan, the Red Bull driver remains focused on understanding the technical shortcomings that prevented him from maintaining his winning momentum.
