Xabi Alonso Praises Mykhailo Mudryk's 'Emotional' Comeback Despite 1-0 Defeat Against Juventus

Mykhailo Mudryk made a highly anticipated return to the pitch on Wednesday, marking his first appearance for Chelsea in nearly two years during a friendly match against Juventus in Hong Kong. The Ukrainian winger, who had been sidelined due to a doping ban, came on as a substitute in the 82nd minute, receiving a warm welcome from both teammates and the 43,575-strong crowd at Kai Tak Stadium. His comeback was made possible after he successfully appealed against the ban, allowing him to resume his football career just days prior to the match.

Manager Xabi Alonso expressed his joy at Mudryk's return, describing the moment as emotional for everyone associated with the club. "Really pleased for him. It was emotional for everyone from the club to see him back," Alonso stated during a post-match press conference. He added, "He was thrilled, for sure. After such a long period, to be back on the pitch, it was a great feeling for him."

Despite Mudryk's spirited performance on the left flank, Chelsea fell short, losing 1-0 to Juventus, who secured victory with a stunning goal from Edon Zhegrova in the second half. The match began slowly, with both teams struggling to create significant opportunities in the first half. Chelsea's Danny Welbeck nearly scored on his debut but failed to convert a flicked header in the 11th minute. Juventus came close to breaking the deadlock just before halftime, with Jeremie Boga forcing a diving save from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The second half saw Chelsea's Marco Palestra miss a chance to score after a long ball from captain Moises Caicedo. Juventus finally found the net in the 68th minute when Kenan Yildiz set up Zhegrova, who curled a beautiful shot into the top corner from outside the box. Despite making several substitutions, Chelsea struggled to regain control and find an equalizer. Alonso reflected on the match, noting, "I think we started pretty well. The first 30, 35 minutes, we played with good control, we created a few chances. Unluckily, we didn't get to win, but for sure, it's the process, it's minutes for everyone."

In addition to Mudryk's return, Chelsea's squad was missing Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill. Alonso mentioned that Palmer had experienced some discomfort following a knock in a previous match against Tottenham but assured that it was not a recurrence of his previous groin injury. Looking ahead, Chelsea will face AC Milan in Jakarta on Saturday, followed by matches against Johor Darul Ta'zim and Real Sociedad, before kicking off their league campaign against Fulham on August 24. Meanwhile, Juventus will head to Australia for friendlies against Inter Milan and Palermo before starting their Serie A season against Frosinone on August 23.
