Spanish authorities have launched an investigation into potential involuntary manslaughter following the tragic death of Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel. The 30-year-old footballer suffered a cardiac arrest after a collision during a second-division match against Andorra on Monday, an incident that has sent shockwaves through the footballing community.

The match, which was tied 2-2 at the time of the incident, was abandoned during added time. The collision occurred as De Miguel challenged for a long ball near the halfway line; Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his penalty area and struck the forward in the chest. Following the impact, Owono was issued a straight red card. De Miguel initially dropped to his knees clutching his torso before collapsing onto the pitch, where he received medical treatment before being transported to a hospital.

Judicial Inquiry and Widespread Tributes

The National Police confirmed on Tuesday that a formal investigation is underway. Under Spanish law, all deaths resulting from non-natural causes, including those occurring during sporting accidents, are subject to mandatory judicial review. The investigation seeks to clarify the circumstances surrounding the collision that led to the player’s collapse and subsequent passing.

Tenerife expressed their profound grief in an official statement, describing the club as “heartbroken” and extending their support to the player’s family. De Miguel, a native of Madrid who began his senior career with Leganés B in 2015, is survived by his wife and daughter. Andorra, the club owned by former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, also shared their condolences, with Piqué writing on social media that he was “sorry with all my soul.”

The football world has responded with an outpouring of support. Real Madrid players observed a minute of silence during their training session, and Espanyol postponed the scheduled presentation of their new head coach. High-profile figures including Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, along with clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool, have publicly expressed their sympathies. In response to the tragedy, the Spanish football federation postponed two Copa del Rey matches and one Copa de la Reina fixture that were scheduled for Tuesday.
