Eto'o Defends Infantino's Leadership
Despite the mounting pressure, Eto'o, who currently serves as the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, has come to Infantino's defense. He contends that the criticism directed at the FIFA president is politically motivated, particularly in light of the upcoming presidential election for FIFA next year. "I don't think that President Gianni Infantino has done anything wrong," Eto'o stated in an interview with CNN. He emphasized that the timing of the backlash coincides with the electoral cycle, suggesting ulterior motives behind the dissent.
Infantino's initiative, which aimed to provide significant financial support to FIFA's 211 member associations, was met with fierce opposition from various confederations and was ultimately scrapped. The FIFA president is now facing the possibility of a no-confidence vote, as UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation, and CONCACAF have all raised concerns regarding the direction of FIFA in recent weeks.
Support from African Football Leaders
In contrast to the criticism from some quarters, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) reaffirmed its support for Infantino earlier this month, a sentiment echoed by Eto'o. He urged African nations to rally behind the FIFA president, highlighting the positive changes he believes Infantino has brought to the sport. "President Gianni Infantino has changed football," Eto'o remarked, noting that Infantino has opened doors for nations that previously lacked opportunities to participate in prestigious tournaments like the World Cup.
Eto'o further praised Infantino for his contributions to the development of football in Africa, stating, "He has helped our continent. He's helped our federations to develop much more quickly, and we need to acknowledge that." He called for recognition of Infantino's efforts and urged support for his continued leadership in the global football community.
