The Indian women's national football team faced a difficult outing on Thursday, falling to a 0-4 defeat against Russia in the first of two international friendly matches. Played at a rain-soaked
While the final scoreline favoured the visitors, the match provided head coach Crispin Chettri with a vital opportunity to test his squad depth. The encounter saw six players—Babysana Devi Thingbaijam, Malati Munda, Cindy Colney, Shubhangi Singh, Dhurga Perumal, and Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam—earn their international debuts, while goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem was handed her first start for the national side.
Disciplined Start Undone by Second-Half Surge
For the majority of the opening half, the 69th-ranked Indian side held their own against their 27th-ranked opponents. The Blue Tigresses maintained a compact defensive block, effectively closing down passing lanes and limiting Russia's ability to penetrate the final third. India even carved out promising opportunities, most notably around the 30-minute mark when Malavika P nearly capitalised on a loose ball, only to be denied by a swift intervention from Russian goalkeeper Natalia Silina.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 40th minute through a moment of individual brilliance from Iana Sheina, whose precise finish into the bottom corner gave Russia a 1-0 lead heading into the break. The challenging weather conditions intensified in the second half, with the slippery surface making it increasingly difficult for India to maintain their defensive structure under sustained pressure.
Russia capitalised on the conditions in the 60th minute when a long-range effort from captain Nadezhda Smirnova proved difficult for Monalisha to handle. The ball parried into the path of substitute Kira Petukhova, who tapped in from close range. Petukhova doubled her personal tally just five minutes later, capitalising on a defensive scramble inside the box to extend the lead to 3-0.
Despite tactical adjustments from the bench, including the introduction of fresh legs in the 66th minute, India could not stem the tide. Iana Svistunova rounded off the scoring in the 81st minute, controlling a cross from the left with composure before firing home. The two sides are scheduled to face each other again on October 11, providing India with a chance to regroup and refine their approach against the high-ranked visitors.
