The disruption began early in the match, with the first stoppage occurring in the 13th minute while the score remained 0-0. Supporters occupying three sides of the stadium—the fourth side is a wall—made their frustrations clear, chanting for the president’s resignation while displaying scarves bearing the message, “Presa, leave now.” Although the game briefly resumed in the 24th minute following a warning from the stadium announcer, the protests continued, leading to a second, more definitive interruption.
Escalating tensions at Vallecas
As the situation worsened, players including Óscar Valentín and Isi Palazón attempted to engage with the Bukaneros, the club’s hardcore fan group, in an effort to calm the atmosphere. Despite a 10-minute break and a return to the field for warm-ups, the match was halted almost immediately upon restart as more objects, including small rubber balls, were thrown onto the playing surface. Following consultations between the referee, police, and team officials, the decision was made to suspend the match entirely.
Rayo Vallecano confirmed the abandonment via social media, stating that the referee acted on the recommendation of the police. The incident marks a significant escalation in the long-standing friction between the club’s ownership and its fanbase, which has persisted since Presa took control of the organization in 2011.
Stadium issues fuel supporter anger
The unrest follows a turbulent period for the club regarding its home ground in the Vallecas neighborhood. Local authorities recently revoked the stadium's license due to safety concerns, forcing the team to play its previous three home matches in Leganés. Many supporters boycotted those fixtures, and the return to their home stadium on Saturday served as a flashpoint for their accumulated grievances.
In a statement released after the match, the Bukaneros described the protest as the result of years of what they termed “disastrous management.” The group cited the recent stadium exile as the “final straw,” warning that further demonstrations are likely. While the match against Athletic Bilbao is expected to be replayed at a later date, the club faces a challenging atmosphere ahead of its next scheduled home game against Elche on October 24.
