Lionel Messi made a triumphant return to club football on Saturday night, netting two goals to lead Inter Miami to a decisive 4-0 victory over D.C. United. The performance marked Messi's first appearance for the club since his retirement from international duty, with the forward playing the full 90 minutes to help snap a frustrating five-match winless skid for the team.

The result also served as a significant milestone for new head coach Cristian “Kily” González, who secured his first league win since taking charge of the squad on September 16. Inter Miami had previously endured a difficult run of four draws and one loss, but they found their rhythm against a D.C. United side that remains winless in their last five outings.

Messi and Suarez Lead Dominant Offensive Display

Luis Suárez set the tone early, opening the scoring just three minutes into the match after connecting with a header from Germán Berterame to beat goalkeeper Sean Johnson. Suárez doubled the lead in the 39th minute, tapping in his second of the night after an initial effort from Messi was deflected into the path of Berterame, who provided the assist.

Following the halftime break, Messi took center stage. In the 47th minute, he capitalized on a centering pass from Suárez near the 6-yard box, slotting the ball inside the right post. He completed his brace in the 60th minute with a piece of individual brilliance, receiving a pass from Rodrigo De Paul before dribbling past two defenders and firing a shot from 12 yards out past Johnson.

The two goals brought Messi’s tally to a league-leading 23 for the season. Germán Berterame proved instrumental in the victory, contributing two assists throughout the evening. The win provides a much-needed boost for Inter Miami, who are looking to build momentum as they prepare to host New York City FC this coming Wednesday. Meanwhile, D.C. United will look to end their own winless streak when they face the New York Red Bulls on the same night.
