Lionel Messi Honoured With Prestigious Princess of Asturias Award for Sports

Lionel Messi has been formally presented with Spain’s most prestigious sporting honour, the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports. The ceremony, held in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo, celebrated the Argentine forward’s unparalleled career and his significant contributions to social initiatives aimed at improving children’s access to health and education.

The 39-year-old was greeted by a crowd of enthusiastic supporters donning Argentina jerseys, who gathered to cheer the football icon as he arrived at the event. During the ceremony, Messi received a formal parchment from Princess Leonor, the heir to the Spanish throne, who praised his ability to consistently perform at an extraordinary level while maintaining a focus on team success over individual ego.

A Legacy of Excellence and Social Impact

The jury that selected Messi for the award in June described him as the most successful footballer in history, highlighting both his on-field achievements and his philanthropic efforts. Throughout a career spanning over two decades, the forward has secured eight Ballon d’Or titles and a World Cup, alongside numerous club-level trophies. His professional journey is defined by a 21-year tenure at Barcelona, where he played a central role in a team that dominated both domestic and European football.

Following his departure from Barcelona in 2021, Messi spent two seasons with Paris Saint-Germain before moving to the United States to join Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. As Argentina’s record-holder for goals, assists, and international appearances, he recently concluded his international career. Reflecting on his journey during a separate event with children in Oviedo, Messi emphasised that the ability to handle both victory and defeat with the right attitude is a fundamental aspect of the sport.

The Princess of Asturias Awards, established in 1981, are considered the most significant honours in the Spanish-speaking world. The sports category has previously been awarded to legendary figures including Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Eliud Kipchoge, and Lindsey Vonn. The accolade, which includes a prize of 50,000 euros, recognises individuals for their contributions to global cooperation, solidarity, and human coexistence. Other recipients honoured alongside Messi this year included author Julian Barnes, astronaut Christina Koch, and musician Patti Smith.
