Inter Milan Dominates Monza in Opening Match of Serie A Title Defense

Inter Milan commenced their Serie A title defense with a commanding 4-1 victory against newly promoted Monza at home on Saturday. The match saw the reigning champions quickly establish dominance, with Hakan Calhanoglu scoring a stunning long-range goal just six minutes into the game. Monza, returning to the top tier after a season in Serie B, managed to equalize in the 29th minute through Gustavo Varela, creating a momentary sense of hope for the visitors.

However, Inter regained control shortly after halftime, with Piotr Zielinski netting the second goal just three minutes into the second half. The home side continued to assert their superiority, as Pio Esposito, who was chosen to start over Marcus Thuram, executed a clever backheel finish from an Andy Diouf cross to extend the lead to 3-1 in the 56th minute. Yann Bisseck capped off the scoring in the 63rd minute, further solidifying Inter's position as strong contenders for the Scudetto this season.

John Stones, one of three England internationals acquired by Inter during the summer transfer window, made his debut as a substitute in the match. Following the game, Inter's coach Cristian Chivu reflected on the team's performance, acknowledging a lack of composure in the first half. "We were a bit rusty during the first half, a bit too frantic as well," he stated. "We regained our calm and clarity after the break," he added, highlighting the team's improvement after halftime.

Napoli Begins Season with a Win

In another match, Napoli, who finished as runners-up to Inter last season, secured a 2-0 victory over Genoa, marking a successful start for new coach Massimiliano Allegri. The seasoned manager, who has previously won Serie A six times, is eager to make an impact after his dismissal from AC Milan last season. Napoli's breakthrough came late in the game, with Kevin De Bruyne scoring in the 82nd minute after coming on as a substitute. The Belgian, who faced injury challenges in his first season with the club, also assisted Antonio Vergara for the second goal, sealing the win.

Allegri praised De Bruyne's exceptional abilities, stating, "He does things that are simply different from everyone else. He sees things that others do not see. There are very few players at that level," emphasizing the midfielder's unique contributions to the team.

In other Serie A action, Como, last season's surprise team, managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Udinese thanks to a second-half equalizer from Greek forward Tasos Douvikas. Como is set to make their Champions League debut next month after finishing fourth under the guidance of Cesc Fabregas. Meanwhile, Cagliari triumphed over Parma with a narrow 1-0 victory, courtesy of Alessandro Romano's late goal.

As the league continues, both Milan and Juventus, looking to bounce back from disappointing previous seasons, will kick off their campaigns on Sunday against Torino and Frosinone, respectively.
