Former Indian captain Bhaichung Bhutia has publicly criticized the potential withdrawal from the ASEAN Cup, arguing that the tournament offers a more competitive environment than the SAFF Championship. Bhutia emphasized the importance of exposing the first-choice team to higher levels of competition, stating, “I strongly insisted that the first team should go and play the FIFA ASEAN Cup. It is a much better competition than the SAFF Championship.”
