Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his gratitude to supporters globally after being named the inaugural winner of the Ballon d'Or of All Time (BOAT) award. The Portugal captain took to social media to dedicate the honour to his followers, stating that the recognition belongs to the fans who participated in the global vote.

The award, introduced by France Football, was designed as a unique initiative to identify the most iconic individual season from a past Ballon d'Or winner. Following the conclusion of the 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony, where Harry Kane was crowned the latest recipient, fans were invited to vote on which historical campaign stood above all others.

A Fan-Led Recognition of 2008

In a departure from the traditional Ballon d'Or format, which relies on a panel of international journalists, the BOAT award was determined exclusively by public participation. Voters were required to pay a one-euro fee to cast their ballot, with the process also serving as an entry into a prize draw for tickets to the 2027 Ballon d'Or ceremony.

The voting process highlighted the enduring rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, as the pair occupied the top 12 positions in the final rankings. Ultimately, voters favoured Ronaldo’s 2008 season at Manchester United—his first time winning the prestigious trophy—over Messi’s 2012 campaign, which saw the Argentine score a record 91 goals in a single calendar year.

Global Participation and Legacy

The initiative drew significant engagement, with thousands of supporters casting their votes. Reports indicated that over 5,000 individuals voted multiple times to support their preferred candidate. The shortlist for the award featured several legendary figures of the game, including Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, Marco van Basten, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Kevin Keegan, Franz Beckenbauer, Alfredo Di Stefano, and Ronaldo Nazario.

While the top of the leaderboard was dominated by the modern era's most prolific duo, the trend was interrupted by Ronaldo Nazario, whose 2002 Ballon d'Or-winning season secured the 13th position. The BOAT award serves as a new chapter in the ongoing discussions regarding football's greatest individual achievements, shifting the focus from expert panels to the global fanbase.
