The incident unfolded on the first day of the match after Jaiswal was dismissed for 45 runs, having hit three boundaries in Fernando's over. The Sri Lankan pacer ultimately claimed Jaiswal's wicket with a delivery that breached his defense and struck the stumps, leading to a heated exchange between the two players.

Following the dismissal, Fernando appeared to taunt Jaiswal, prompting the Indian batter to confront him. The situation escalated quickly, with both players coming dangerously close to a physical confrontation. Jaiswal later took to social media to address the incident, suggesting that there was more to the story than what was captured on camera. The International Cricket Council (ICC) responded to the incident by imposing fines on both players, each receiving a penalty of 25 percent of their match fees along with one demerit point. However, Jaiswal's defense did little to quell the backlash. Cheteshwar Pujara, speaking on the Sony Sports Network, condemned the physicality of the exchange, stating, “It's not an ideal visual. As a player, you need to control your emotions.” He acknowledged that while frustration is natural, crossing into physical confrontation is unacceptable.

WV Raman echoed Pujara's sentiments, suggesting that Jaiswal's mounting frustration over missed opportunities in the series may have contributed to the incident. “Restraint is so important because if you don't restrain yourself, you're going to get in trouble,” Raman remarked, noting that Jaiswal's inability to convert good starts into substantial scores could have fueled his emotions during the match.

Saba Karim, a former selector for the Indian team, was particularly vocal in his criticism, emphasizing the responsibility of international players to serve as role models. “This is not a contact sport. It is cricket,” Karim stated, highlighting the need for players to maintain composure even in the face of provocation.
