Harbaugh suggests Nabers is likely to be prepared for the season opener.

In a significant development for the New York Giants, wide receiver Malik Nabers participated in live drills on Monday, marking a crucial milestone in his recovery from a torn ACL. This was the first time he donned a standard practice jersey, shedding the red no-contact attire that had characterized his rehabilitation process. With the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys set for September 13, Nabers is on track to return, provided he avoids any setbacks.

Head coach John Harbaugh expressed cautious optimism regarding Nabers' progress. "I think it's reasonable to assume that," he stated, while emphasizing the importance of monitoring the player's condition through the insights provided by medical staff. Harbaugh noted that Nabers is in a strong position, but the true test will come during practice as he continues to adapt to the physical demands of the game. "You can see it," he added, referring to Nabers' performance during drills.

Progress on the Field

During Monday's practice, Nabers showcased his skills by participating in both 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 drills, completing three reps in each format. He made a notable catch, diving to secure a pass just above the turf, although he also experienced some typical rust, including a dropped pass and a false start. This was a step up from last week when he only engaged in non-contact drills while still wearing the red jersey.

Harbaugh indicated that while it was not essential for Nabers to engage in contact drills immediately, it would be beneficial for him to experience the physicality of the game before the regular season begins. "I thought he looked good," Harbaugh remarked, adding that Nabers appeared to be moving better than he had in previous practices. The Giants are scheduled to practice in full pads on Tuesday, and Nabers is expected to participate, albeit with a manageable workload.

Road to Recovery

Nabers' journey back to the field has not been without challenges. He suffered a torn ACL and meniscus during a Week 4 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers last season, which coincided with quarterback Jaxson Dart's first career start. Following surgery in October, Nabers faced additional procedures earlier this year to address scar tissue and stiffness. Despite these hurdles, he returned to training camp last month, successfully avoiding the physically unable to perform list.

Throughout the summer, Nabers has shown consistent improvement, participating in nearly every practice session, with only a few exceptions. "I'm listening to my body as much as possible," he shared last week, highlighting his communication with the training staff regarding his condition. As he continues to ramp up his activity, Nabers remains focused on regaining his form, having recorded 18 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns in just four games last season, following a standout rookie year with 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024.
