Wasim Jaffer questions Rinku Singh's omission from India's T20I squad

Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has voiced significant concerns regarding the team's selection strategy, specifically highlighting the absence of Rinku Singh during the ongoing T20I series against the West Indies. Jaffer’s comments follow India’s 24-run defeat in the fourth T20I, a match where the visitors successfully defended a target of 248 to level the five-match series at 2-2.

The West Indies secured the win behind a dominant unbeaten 102 off 50 balls from Shai Hope, which propelled them to a total of 247/3. In response, India’s chase faltered, resulting in the team being bowled out for 223 in 19.3 overs. Jaffer believes that the inclusion of a specialist finisher like Rinku could have provided the necessary impetus to alter the outcome of the high-scoring encounter.

The Case for Rinku Singh

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer argued that Rinku’s exclusion is particularly puzzling given his proven track record in the middle and lower order. While acknowledging the depth of India's top-order talent, Jaffer suggested that Rinku’s specific skill set as a left-handed finisher makes him an essential asset that the current lineup is missing.

Jaffer noted that Rinku’s ability to win matches from difficult positions, a trait frequently demonstrated in franchise cricket, is exactly what India lacked during the recent chase. Statistically, Rinku has proven highly effective when batting at No. 5 or 6, accumulating 518 runs across 22 innings at an average of 43.15 and a strike rate of 156.00. This contrasts with his overall performance this year, where he has recorded 152 runs in 13 matches at an average of 25.33.

Concerns Over All-Rounder Selection

Beyond the batting order, Jaffer also questioned the tactical reliance on Naman Dhir as a bowling option. He expressed skepticism regarding the expectation that Dhir should bowl his full quota of four overs, suggesting that off-spinners without significant variations often struggle once the powerplay concludes, especially on Indian surfaces.

Jaffer emphasized that for Dhir to justify his place in the T20I side, his contributions with the bat must improve. Having managed only 14 runs across three innings in the series, the all-rounder is under pressure to deliver the quick-fire cameos expected of his role. With the series now locked at 2-2, both teams are set to face off in the deciding fifth T20I in Bengaluru on Saturday, October 17.
