Virat Kohli hits record-breaking century in India's dominant ODI win over West Indies

Virat Kohli delivered a masterclass in aggressive batting on Sunday, powering India to a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram. The star batter remained unbeaten on 139 from just 88 deliveries, an innings defined by its rapid scoring rate and a series of significant statistical milestones that further cement his status in the format.

The century, which arrived off just 74 balls, stands as the third-fastest ODI hundred of Kohli’s career. Only his 52-ball effort against Australia in 2013 and a 61-ball century against the same opponent later that year rank higher in his personal history. This latest performance underscored his ability to dictate terms, as he struck nine sixes—the highest tally in a single ODI innings for the veteran campaigner.

A historic tally of centuries and milestones

With this performance, Kohli became the only batter in the history of ODI cricket to record 10 centuries against two different opponents, having previously reached the same mark against Sri Lanka. His 139 not out also elevated his career List A century tally to 60, bringing him level with Sachin Tendulkar. Notably, Kohli achieved this feat in 338 innings, significantly faster than the 538 innings Tendulkar required to reach the same milestone.

The match also saw Kohli continue his prolific record in successful run chases. He has now been involved in 112 ODI victories while chasing, a figure that places him behind only Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni on the all-time list. Furthermore, his aggressive approach against the West Indies bowling attack resulted in him scoring 53 runs off Alzarri Joseph, marking the most runs he has ever accumulated against a single bowler in an ODI innings.

Focusing on the future

Reflecting on his performance and the accumulation of records, Kohli maintained that his primary focus remains on team requirements rather than personal accolades. He noted that concentrating solely on the ODI format has provided him with greater clarity as he looks toward the 2027 World Cup.

“My focus has never really been on these milestones,” Kohli said following the match. “It’s just understanding the situation and doing the job for the team. I feel very grateful and blessed to be in this position for having played for so long. We have a very blessed life and a blessed journey, so we better put our head down and just work hard every day.”
