Shubman Gill makes history as first captain to hit Test and ODI double centuries

Shubman Gill has etched his name into the record books by becoming the first captain in international cricket history to score double centuries in both the Test and ODI formats. The Indian skipper achieved this milestone during a sensational performance in the second ODI against West Indies in Guwahati, where he smashed an unbeaten 223 off just 133 deliveries.

This achievement follows his previous Test double century, a commanding 269 against England at Edgbaston in 2025. By adding an ODI double ton to his resume, Gill has solidified his status as a prolific leader, having already set the record for the highest score by an Indian captain in Test cricket during that series in England.

A record-breaking chase in Guwahati

The Guwahati encounter proved to be a high-scoring spectacle, with West Indies setting a daunting target of 406 after posting 405/7—their first-ever ODI total exceeding 400. Centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope, and Amir Jangoo had put the visitors in a commanding position, but Gill’s response ensured India successfully chased down the target with 39 balls to spare.

Gill’s innings was marked by extraordinary aggression, as he reached his double century in just 117 balls, eclipsing Ishan Kishan’s previous record of 126 balls for the fastest ODI double ton. His unbeaten 223, which included 26 fours and eight sixes, now stands as the highest individual score in a successful ODI chase, surpassing the 201 not out previously held by Glenn Maxwell.

Statistical milestones and team achievements

The match was a landmark event for India, as their 406/2 marked the highest successful ODI chase in the team's history. This performance also represents only the second time a men's international side has successfully chased a target of 400 or more, a feat previously achieved only by South Africa in 2006.

The foundation for the victory was built on a 255-run opening partnership between Gill and Rohit Sharma, who contributed 101 runs before his dismissal. Following the departure of his opening partner, Gill continued his dominance alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad to seal the win. With this innings, Gill has now recorded multiple ODI double centuries, joining Rohit Sharma as the only other Indian to achieve the feat. Furthermore, the 223-run knock saw Gill reach his 11th ODI century in just 68 innings, making him the fastest Indian to reach that milestone, comfortably surpassing the previous record of 82 innings held by Virat Kohli.
