Rishabh Pant surpasses Shubman Gill to take the top spot as India's highest run-scorer in the World Test Championship.

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Rishabh Pant has etched his name in the annals of Indian cricket history by becoming the highest run-scorer for India in the ICC World Test Championship. This achievement unfolded during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, where Pant was not out at 63 at lunch on the second day, contributing to India's impressive first-innings total of 419 for six.

Pant's total of 2,948 runs from 42 Tests has now surpassed the previous record held by captain Shubman Gill, who has accumulated 2,917 runs in the same number of matches. Following them in the rankings are Rohit Sharma with 2,716 runs from 40 Tests, Ravindra Jadeja with 2,675 runs from 50 Tests, and Virat Kohli, who has scored 2,617 runs in 46 Tests. Among the current players, Yashasvi Jaiswal stands next with 2,588 runs from 30 Tests.

In addition to this latest milestone, Pant also surpassed former captain MS Dhoni to become India's leading run-scorer as a designated wicketkeeper in away or neutral Tests. Pant has now crossed the 2,500-run mark in this category, achieving 2,501 runs at an average of nearly 42, while Dhoni's tally stands at 2,496 runs with an average of 32.84. Farokh Engineer, Syed Kirmani, and Kiran More follow in the rankings with 1,209, 1,109, and 901 runs, respectively.

Pant's achievements come on the heels of an injury scare on the first day of the Test, where he had to retire hurt after being struck on the left arm by a delivery from Sri Lankan pacer Lahiru Kumara, having scored just three runs. However, he returned on Day 2 to form a crucial partnership with Dhruv Jurel, who also reached his half-century. Together, they forged an unbeaten 112-run stand for the seventh wicket, significantly bolstering India's position in the match.

With their total of 419/6, India has established a formidable presence in Colombo, marking only the 11th occasion a team has scored over 400 runs in the first innings of a Test at this venue. Historically, six of the previous ten instances have resulted in victories, while four ended in draws. The century partnership between Pant and Jurel is particularly noteworthy, as it is only the second time India has recorded a 100-plus stand for the seventh wicket or lower in a Test match in Sri Lanka, the last occurrence being in 2015.
