Ravi Shastri Urges Workload Management for Jasprit Bumrah Ahead of New Zealand Tour

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has issued a clear directive regarding the management of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, suggesting that the bowler should not feature across all three formats in the lead-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup. Shastri believes that prioritizing Test cricket while using Bumrah sparingly in limited-overs formats is essential to keeping the spearhead fit for key assignments, specifically highlighting the upcoming two-Test series in New Zealand as a priority.

The former coach also weighed in on the composition of the squad for the demanding six-week tour of New Zealand, which commences on October 22 and includes five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Test matches. Shastri expressed his approval of Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s inclusion in the T20I setup, citing his quality and experience as vital assets for the conditions expected in New Zealand. Additionally, he advocated for the recall of Mohammed Shami, asserting that the veteran has proven his credentials with both the red and white balls to warrant a return to the Test and ODI squads.

Strategic Challenges and Leadership Expectations

Shastri views the upcoming New Zealand series as a significant barometer for the Indian team, particularly with an eye on the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. He noted that the conditions in New Zealand, which will be emerging from winter, are likely to favor seam and swing bowling. According to the former coach, the movement of the ball in the air and off the pitch, combined with challenging wind conditions, will require the Indian batting lineup to adapt rapidly. He emphasized that building partnerships will be critical, as wickets could fall in quick succession if batters fail to adjust to the environment.

The tour also represents a major leadership test for Test captain Shubman Gill. Despite the difficulty of the assignment, Shastri offered his support to the young skipper, noting that Gill’s current form and previous experience in New Zealand should serve him well. Regarding wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, Shastri maintained that the player should continue to play his natural game while remaining mindful of the match situation. However, Shastri identified fielding as a primary area of concern, stating that the team's standards have dipped and must improve significantly to compete for major tournament titles.

World Test Championship Ambitions

Addressing India’s standing in the World Test Championship, Shastri acknowledged that the path to the final remains a steep climb. He estimated that the team likely needs to win approximately 90 percent of their remaining fixtures to qualify, a tally that includes securing victories in both Tests against New Zealand and at least four of the five matches in the upcoming series against Australia. While he admitted that the task is difficult and dependent on other results, he maintained that it remains within the realm of possibility for the side.
