Australia captain
Renshaw’s contribution was the cornerstone of the win, particularly after Australia found themselves in a difficult position at 124/6 on the opening day. The left-hander responded with a first-innings 190 followed by 82 in the second, a display that has certainly complicated the selection process for the team management. Cummins acknowledged that moving a player in such form would require a very compelling reason, yet he stopped short of guaranteeing a permanent shift in the batting order.
Evaluating the batting order
The tactical shift to move Renshaw into the middle order was prompted by an abdominal injury to Cameron Green, which forced a reshuffle. The team also opted to recall Nic Maddinson to open the batting, a move that provided the side with a different dynamic. Cummins noted that the team is committed to maintaining tactical flexibility, which could involve rotating players like Travis Head, Renshaw, or Maddinson depending on the match situation.
“Give us a few days, we’ll look at the conditions of the next Test. I mean, it’s got to be pretty compelling to move Renshaw from there,” Cummins said. The captain emphasized that while the team has settled roles for Marnus Labuschagne at No. 3 and Steve Smith at No. 4, the flexibility provided by the current squad allows for strategic adjustments. He suggested that Renshaw remains a viable option as an opener, noting that his recent success in the middle order has simply added another dimension to his capabilities.
Looking ahead to Gqeberha
The victory in Durban was bolstered by a standout bowling performance from Josh Hazlewood, who claimed a career-best six wickets in the second innings to seal the result on Day 5. With the series now moving to Gqeberha, the Australian leadership is focused on how to best deploy their top six batters and wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Cummins reiterated that the team is comfortable with the idea of changing openers or swapping positions between innings if the pitch or weather conditions demand a different approach.
“We’re very big on that flexibility. I know you’re probably sick of us talking about it but, why not next week, have different openers if the conditions take us somewhere different, or swapping out the batting orders between innings,” Cummins added. As the team prepares for the next encounter, the focus remains on maintaining the winning momentum while keeping the opposition guessing regarding their final XI.
