The campaign has garnered significant support from the global cricketing community, with 21 former international captains signing a petition addressed to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The list of signatories includes prominent figures such as Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sir Alastair Cook, Michael Atherton, Steve Waugh, Adam Gilchrist, and Nasser Hussain. These former players, who described themselves as colleagues and rivals united by their shared history on the field, argued that their bond transcends national borders and political disputes.
The petition specifically requests that a Supreme Court-directed medical board—which includes Khan’s own personal physicians—be permitted to conduct a comprehensive health evaluation. Furthermore, the signatories have called for the immediate implementation of any medical recommendations and the guarantee of uninterrupted weekly family visits. The group emphasized that ensuring a court-ordered medical process is completed should not be viewed as a controversial request, regardless of the legal or political context surrounding the case.
Concerns Over Health and Isolation
Imran Khan, who famously led Pakistan to their maiden ODI World Cup title in 1992 and later served as the nation's prime minister, has been held in Rawalpindi since 2023 following convictions on corruption charges. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that the legal proceedings against him are politically motivated. Recently, his sons, Sulaiman and Kasim, raised alarms regarding their father’s safety and well-being.
Greg Chappell, who has been vocal about his concerns, recently highlighted the physical decline of the former cricketer. Recalling a meeting with Khan six years ago, Chappell described him as a robust individual, a stark contrast to recent reports and footage showing the former leader in a wheelchair. Chappell expressed deep concern regarding the impact of prolonged isolation on Khan’s physical and mental health.
