Pakistan Overhauls Test Squad and Coaching Staff Following Lord’s Defeat

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has initiated a significant restructuring of its national team following a demoralizing 194-run defeat to England at Lord’s. The decision comes as the side faces a 0-2 deficit in the three-match series, a result that follows a heavy innings-and-103-run loss in the opening Test at Leeds. With five losses in their previous six outings, the board has opted for a comprehensive mid-tour overhaul ahead of the final match in Birmingham.

The shake-up includes the release of seven players from the touring party, among them notable names such as former white-ball captain Salman Ali Agha, wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, and opening batter Imam-ul-Haq. The exodus also includes Ali Usman, Aamir Jamal, Muhammad Awais Zafar, and Khurram Shahzad. These departures follow intense scrutiny regarding player form and fitness, particularly concerning Imam-ul-Haq, who missed both innings at Lord’s due to a calf injury, and Rizwan, whose recent batting performances have come under significant pressure.

To fill the vacancies left by the departing players, the PCB has called up seven replacements. The influx of new talent features Test-capped batters Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, alongside left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Arafat Minhas. Ayub brings experience from eight previous Test appearances, while Fazal has featured in two. Minhas, meanwhile, transitions to the red-ball setup having already represented the country in three ODIs and four T20Is.

The squad has also been bolstered by four players who are currently uncapped at the Test level: left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Imran Jnr, wicketkeeper-batter Saad Baig, and right-arm pace-bowling all-rounders Mohammad Imran—also known as Imran Randhawa—and Razaullah. The updated squad, led by captain Babar Azam, will now look to regroup and salvage a result in the final fixture of the series.
