Nathan McSweeney has attributed his standout performance in the one-day series against India A to a meticulous study of elite batting techniques. The Australian batter, who was named Player of the Series, revealed that he spent time watching YouTube footage of Virat Kohli and Steve Smith to better understand how to navigate the challenges of playing spin bowling in Indian conditions.

The preparation paid dividends throughout the three-match series in Puducherry, where McSweeney amassed 194 runs across three innings. Maintaining an average of 64.66 and a strike rate of 83.62, he proved to be the most consistent performer for the visitors, playing a central role in Australia A’s 2-1 series triumph.

Mastering the art of spin

McSweeney explained that adapting to the spin-heavy nature of Indian pitches required both technical adjustments and a deep dive into the methods of successful players. Beyond his own research, he credited the team's support staff for providing the necessary data and analysis to help him execute his game plan effectively.

During the matches, McSweeney demonstrated a varied approach to countering the Indian spinners. He frequently used his feet to reach the pitch of the ball, employed the sweep shot, and looked to rotate the strike by finding gaps in the field. This proactive strategy allowed him to disrupt the bowlers' rhythm and maintain a steady scoring rate on surfaces that proved difficult for many others.

A successful tour for Australia A

The series saw Australia A start strongly, securing a comprehensive 125-run victory in the opening match after posting 274 and bowling out the hosts for 149. They followed this with a 69-run win in the second encounter, successfully defending a total of 275. Although India A denied the visitors a clean sweep by winning the final match by 49 runs, the series result remained firmly in Australia’s favor.

Reflecting on the achievement, McSweeney emphasized the difficulty of winning in India, noting that the result was a significant milestone for the squad. Looking ahead, the batter expressed a desire to refine his approach in long-format cricket. Having struggled to convert starts into substantial scores during the preceding unofficial Test series, which Australia A lost 0-1, he identified the importance of capitalizing on first-innings opportunities in future red-ball matches.
