India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has shared his appreciation for Mohammed Shami, crediting the veteran fast bowler for helping him integrate into the national team setup. The former South African international, who joined Gautam Gambhir’s coaching staff in 2024, highlighted Shami’s influence on the team culture and his supportive nature during their time working together.

The pair’s professional relationship was most notable during the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, which served as Shami’s final appearance for the national side. While Morkel noted that they did not have the chance to collaborate extensively in the Test format, the impact of the experienced pacer on the coaching staff was immediate and significant.

A lasting impact on the Indian dressing room

Reflecting on his transition into the Indian coaching staff, Morkel expressed gratitude for the guidance he received from the senior bowler. He described Shami as a highly skilled cricketer whose presence provided stability and a welcoming atmosphere within the squad. According to Morkel, Shami played a key role in helping him navigate the nuances of the team’s environment and communication style during his initial period with the group.

Speaking to broadcasters, Morkel remarked on the personal support he received, noting that Shami was instrumental in helping him adapt to the dressing room culture. He acknowledged that while it is a sad day to see such a prominent figure step away from the longest format, the contribution Shami made to the team’s internal dynamics remains highly valued.

Reflecting on a distinguished Test career

Shami’s announcement on Friday brought an end to a 12-year Test career that saw him establish himself as one of India's most effective fast bowlers. Over the course of 64 Test matches, he claimed 229 wickets, cementing his legacy as a vital component of the team's bowling attack. Across all international formats, the 36-year-old finished with a total of 462 wickets, including 206 in One Day Internationals.

Despite his departure from Test cricket, Shami is not retiring from the sport entirely. He has confirmed his intention to continue competing in white-ball cricket for Bengal and remains committed to participating in the Indian Premier League. Morkel expressed his satisfaction that Shami continues to maintain his fitness and workload at the domestic level, noting that the bowler is still putting in significant effort on the pitch. The bowling coach emphasized that seeing Shami continue to bowl high volumes of overs back home is a positive sign for his ongoing involvement in the game.
