Mike Hussey, the former Australian cricketer, has expressed a willingness to assist England's batting lineup during the upcoming Ashes series, following an approach from England's head coach, Stephen Fleming. Fleming, who took over the role in July, succeeded Brendon McCullum and has a long-standing professional relationship with Hussey, having collaborated for over 15 years at the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.

While Hussey remains uncertain about the seriousness of Fleming's proposal, he is open to the idea. "There are many factors to consider. My short answer is I would not say no to anything really," Hussey stated in an interview with Fox Sports News, as reported by Reuters. He emphasized his passion for coaching, stating, "I love the coaching side of the game. I love trying to help players get better whether they are Australians, English, South Africans, Pakistanis, Indians, or from anywhere else."

Reflections on Coaching for England

Hussey, who amassed 6,235 runs in 79 Test matches for Australia, previously served as England's batting consultant during their victorious campaign in the 2022 T20 World Cup. He acknowledged the peculiar nature of potentially donning England's colors, given the fierce rivalry between the two nations. "It would feel a bit weird – definitely – coaching for England against Australia in an Ashes series, no question," he remarked. However, he added, "If that is your job, you just get on with it." Hussey clarified that he views coaching as a collaborative effort rather than a competition against a specific team.

Despite his openness, Hussey is cautious about making a quick decision. He highlighted the importance of his close relationship with Fleming and the personal consideration of time away from his family. "I won't be rushing into a decision," he noted. "The time away from family is a real thing for me."

Expectations for England's Future

Hussey also expressed confidence in Fleming's capabilities as England's coach, predicting a shift towards a more controlled style of play. "He has a very good understanding of the game," Hussey commented, describing Fleming as a "very shrewd operator" who balances enjoyment with strategic play. He anticipates that England will continue to play positively but with a more measured approach than in recent years. "He will try and be a bit smarter with it," Hussey added.

The Ashes series is set to take place in June, July, and August of next year, as England aims to reclaim the urn for the first time since 2015.
