India's coach clarifies Kuldeep Yadav's absence from bowling in the second innings against Sri Lanka XI.

In a recent warm-up match against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo, Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav did not bowl during the second innings, raising questions about a potential injury. However, Sairaj Bahutule, India’s spin bowling coach, clarified that the decision was purely a matter of managing Kuldeep’s workload ahead of the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka.

During the three-day practice match, Kuldeep delivered an impressive performance, bowling a total of 18 overs, in addition to a few overs before the match commenced. With nearly 20 overs under his belt, the team management opted to rest him in the second innings to allow him to gauge how his body was responding to the exertion. Bahutule explained, “Kuldeep bowled almost 20 overs in the sense 18 in the match and about two-three overs before the game also. He had a very good outing and he just wanted to take a break in terms of just understanding how his body is at.” This decision was not related to any fitness concerns, but rather a strategic choice to ensure Kuldeep remains in optimal condition for the Tests ahead.

Spinners Gain Valuable Experience

The warm-up match also provided an opportunity for other spin bowlers in the Indian squad to gain valuable experience. Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar each bowled approximately 14 to 15 overs, while Saransh Jain was also given a chance to bowl, allowing him to acclimate to the playing conditions. The practice match served as a crucial test for the spinners, particularly as the pitch conditions evolved throughout the game. Initially, the surface was relatively flat, but it began to offer more assistance to spin bowlers as the match progressed.

Bahutule noted the significance of this experience, stating, “The bowlers had a great opportunity to go down and express themselves on a pitch which was slightly on a flatter side in the first day. But as the days went by, there was more turn on to it and definitely a good outing for the spinners.”

Looking Ahead to the Test Series

India emerged victorious in the warm-up match, winning by six wickets, which provided the team with essential match practice before the Test series. The first Test against Sri Lanka is set to begin on August 15 in Galle, followed by the second Test starting on August 23 in Colombo. This preparation is crucial as the team aims to perform well in the upcoming series.
