Joe Root becomes first England batter to surpass 8,000 ODI runs

Joe Root has cemented his status as a cornerstone of English cricket by becoming the first player from his country to surpass 8,000 runs in One-Day Internationals. The milestone was achieved during a fixture against Sri Lanka in the ongoing Pakistan ODI Tri-Series, where the right-hander produced a composed innings of 69 from 66 balls, featuring eight boundaries.

This achievement, reached in his 186th ODI innings, further highlights the consistency that has defined the 33-year-old's career in the 50-over format. Following this performance, Root’s career tally stands at 8,005 runs across 197 matches, maintaining an impressive average of 50.66 and a strike rate of 87.83. His record includes 20 centuries and 49 half-centuries, with a career-best score of 166.

A dominant figure in England's ODI history

Root’s latest feat places him significantly ahead of his peers in the national record books. He currently leads the list of England’s highest ODI run-scorers by a substantial margin, sitting over 1,000 runs clear of former captain Eoin Morgan, who retired with 6,957 runs from 225 matches. Other notable names in the top five include Jos Buttler with 5,678 runs, followed by Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood.

Beyond the total run count, Root also holds the top position for career average and the number of centuries scored for England in the format. Since his debut against India in 2013, he has been a reliable presence in the batting order, known for his ability to anchor innings and adapt to various match situations.

Consistency across the international stage

The batter's impact has been consistent across all formats throughout his career. In both 2015 and 2016, he set new benchmarks for the most runs scored by an England player across all international formats in a single calendar year, amassing 2,228 and 2,570 runs respectively. His 2016 performance was particularly notable, as he narrowly missed Michael Vaughan’s record for the most Test runs in a calendar year by just five runs.

Following his tenure as Test captain, which began in 2017, Root maintained his high standards in the white-ball game, recording over 900 runs in three consecutive years between 2017 and 2019. After a brief hiatus from the 50-over format starting in 2020, he returned to the squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, where he contributed three half-centuries. This latest milestone serves as a testament to his enduring quality and adaptability at the highest level of the sport.
