The Indian national cricket team is currently awaiting definitive fitness reports for star pacer
Alongside Bumrah, three other players—Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Harshit Rana—are also undergoing rigorous match simulation assessments this week. These evaluations are being conducted at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) between September 4 and September 9 to determine if the players can handle the physical demands of international competition.
Prince Yadav Identified as Contingency Option
In the event that any of the players currently under assessment are deemed unavailable, national selectors have identified Prince Yadav as a primary backup. Yadav, who made his international debut during the home ODI series against Afghanistan in June, has been cleared by the CoE following his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during the second T20I in Zimbabwe on July 25.
Selectors have expressed confidence in Yadav’s development, noting his consistent performances in the T20 format since this year’s IPL. His availability provides the team management with a reliable alternative as they finalize the squad composition for the upcoming fixtures.
Long-term Planning for Test Cricket
Beyond the immediate T20I commitments, the team management is prioritizing Bumrah’s return to the longest format of the game. Officials are keen for the fast bowler to participate in a first-class match before the Test series in New Zealand, as he has not featured in red-ball cricket since the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati last November.
The BCCI source indicated that the primary concern remains the load-bearing capacity of Bumrah’s knee. Whether he participates in a Ranji Trophy fixture or represents India ‘A’ in New Zealand remains under consideration, particularly as the ‘A’ team schedule overlaps with the upcoming ODI series in New Zealand. To manage his workload effectively, it is anticipated that Bumrah may be rested for the home T20I series against the West Indies in October.
