James Anderson to continue cricket career as captain in Italy

Legendary England fast bowler James Anderson is set to embark on a new chapter in his storied career, confirming he will continue playing in Italy following his departure from Lancashire. The 44-year-old, who concluded a remarkable 25-year tenure with his home county, has signed on to captain and co-own a team based in Naples for an upcoming 10-over tournament.

Anderson, widely regarded as one of the most successful bowlers in the history of the sport, brings an immense wealth of experience to the competition. Throughout his career, he has featured in over 400 matches across all formats, claiming nearly 1,000 wickets. His involvement in the Italian league marks a significant transition as he moves away from the domestic English circuit to help promote the game in a burgeoning cricket market.

A new challenge in the Italian T10 circuit

The tournament is scheduled to take place over 12 days at the Roma Cricket Ground, with the opening fixtures beginning on November 18. Anderson will be joined by a host of high-profile international talent, including Chris Gayle, Shaun Marsh, and Dawid Malan. These stars will compete alongside members of the Italian national team, providing a blend of global experience and local development.

The competition was established by former professional cricketer Nadeem Shahid and Aamir Akhtar, the latter of whom was instrumental in launching a major cricket tournament in Nepal. According to Shahid, the timing of the event is strategic, capitalising on the Italian Olympic Committee’s increasing interest in the sport following its inclusion in the Olympic Games programme.

Focusing on long-term development

Beyond the immediate competition, the initiative has a clear mandate to foster the growth of cricket within Italy. Organisers are planning to offer free entry to spectators and host a series of coaching clinics to help nurture local talent. Anderson’s company, Activate Sport & Leisure, is set to play an active role in these sessions, contributing to Italy’s long-term goal of preparing a competitive squad for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.

Reflecting on his new role, Anderson expressed a dual focus on performance and legacy. While he remains committed to leading the Napoli Knights to a title challenge, he emphasised the importance of the tournament's broader impact. He noted that the objective is to contribute to a project that fosters the sport's development well beyond the conclusion of the 12-day event.
