Ishan Kishan Smashes Record in India's Asian Games Semifinal Rescue

Ishan Kishan delivered a masterclass in pressure management during India’s Asian Games 2026 semifinal clash against Sri Lanka, anchoring the innings with a brilliant unbeaten 80. His aggressive display was the cornerstone of India's total of 169/7, providing the team with a fighting chance after a shaky start left their batting lineup in a precarious position.

Walking to the crease with the team under significant duress, the left-hander shifted the momentum of the match almost single-handedly. Kishan’s 46-ball knock was defined by its controlled aggression, featuring four boundaries and five towering sixes. By the time the 20 overs were completed, he had not only stabilized the innings but also propelled India to a competitive target of 170.

A Record-Breaking Performance

Beyond the immediate impact on the scoreboard, Kishan’s innings etched his name into the history books. His unbeaten 80 stands as the highest individual score by an Indian batter at the No. 5 position or lower in T20 Internationals. In achieving this feat, he surpassed the long-standing record held by Manish Pandey, who had scored an unbeaten 79 against South Africa at Centurion back in 2018.

The list of top scores from the lower middle-order for India is now topped by Kishan, followed by Pandey’s 79*, Yuvraj Singh’s 77* against Australia in 2013, and Hardik Pandya’s 71* against the same opposition in 2022. Rinku Singh also features prominently in this elite company with scores of 69* and 68 recorded in recent years.

Navigating a Challenging Innings

India’s pursuit of a high total began with promise, as opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi provided early momentum with a rapid 38 off 21 deliveries. However, the innings hit a turbulent patch as the middle order struggled to maintain the pace. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson both fell for seven runs each, and the departure of Sooryavanshi left the side reeling.

The situation grew more difficult as Shreyas Iyer was bowled by Wanuja Sahan for 13, while Axar Patel and Tilak Varma were unable to make significant contributions. Amidst this collapse, Kishan took full responsibility, carefully rebuilding the innings before accelerating in the final stages. For Sri Lanka, the bowling effort was led by captain Sahan Arachchige and Tharindu Ratnayake, who each claimed two wickets. Wanuja Sahan, Nuwanidu Fernando, and Lasith Croospulle also chipped in with a wicket apiece to round out the bowling performance.
