Hoey leads Irish bowling charge in Windhoek
Ireland opened their five-match ODI series against Namibia with a clinical 55-run victory at the High Performance Oval in Windhoek. After setting a target of 230, the Irish bowling attack dismantled the Namibia lineup, with
Namibia captained the toss and elected to field, a decision that initially paid dividends as they restricted Ireland to 229/9 from their allotted 50 overs. Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton was the primary architect of Namibia's bowling effort, claiming impressive figures of 4/36 from his nine overs. Despite the pressure, Ireland found stability through captain Paul Stirling, who anchored the innings with a composed 56 off 71 balls. He was well-supported by Cade Carmichael, who contributed a valuable 45 off 80 balls to ensure Ireland reached a defendable total.
Namibia chase falters under pressure
Facing a target of 230, Namibia's pursuit began poorly as they lost an early wicket, putting them on the back foot immediately. While Ruben Trumpelmann provided a spirited resistance with a rapid 50 off 43 balls and Louren Steenkamp offered some support, the middle order struggled to build the necessary momentum against a disciplined Irish attack.
The match turned decisively when Gavin Hoey claimed the crucial wicket of Louren Steenkamp, caught by George Dockrell. Hoey finished his nine-over spell with 3/29, effectively stifling any hopes of a Namibian recovery. With George Dockrell also providing tight support, Namibia were eventually bowled out for 174. The victory gives Ireland an early 1-0 lead in the five-match series, setting the tone for the remainder of the tour.
