BCCI Announces Split Captaincy for India's ODI Series Against New Zealand

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed a unique leadership arrangement for the upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand, appointing two different captains to lead the squad. Shubman Gill has been tasked with leading the team for the opening three fixtures, while Shreyas Iyer will assume the captaincy for the final two matches of the series.

This strategic rotation comes as the team manages a tight schedule between the conclusion of the Test series and the start of the white-ball encounters. Shreyas Iyer will serve as Gill’s deputy during the first three games, with Ishan Kishan stepping into the vice-captaincy role when Iyer takes the helm for the closing stages of the tour. Despite the leadership transition, senior stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been confirmed as available for the duration of the entire five-match series.

Squad Rotations and New Call-ups

The selection committee has opted for a tiered squad approach, with several players rotating in and out of the setup. KL Rahul, along with pacers Anshul Kamboj and Prasidh Krishna, are slated to feature only in the first three ODIs. Notably, Krishna’s participation remains contingent on his recovery from a left hamstring injury. Following the third match, these players are scheduled to depart to focus on preparations for the upcoming Test series.

The final two matches will see the introduction of fresh talent, including left-handed batter Tilak Varma and pacer Auqib Nabi. Furthermore, the selectors have handed maiden ODI call-ups to Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra and fast bowler Yash Thakur, the latter of whom has previously represented India in T20Is. The broader squad continues to feature established names such as Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Gurnoor Brar, and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Despite recent speculation, there have been no recalls for senior fast bowlers Mohammed Shami or Bhuvneshwar Kumar for this series.

Series Schedule and Logistics

The ODI series is set to commence on November 4 at Eden Park in Auckland, followed by the second match at Basin Reserve in Wellington on November 7. The third encounter will take place at Seddon Park in Hamilton on November 10, before the series concludes with the final two matches at Mount Maunganui on November 13 and 15. All five fixtures are scheduled to begin at 7:30 AM IST.
