India secured a thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the opening match of their five-game T20I series in Christchurch on Thursday, successfully hunting down a daunting target of 226. The result marks India's highest successful run chase in the format, eclipsing their previous record of 209.
Middle-order wobble and late-game heroics
Despite the explosive start, the chase faced a significant hurdle in the middle overs. New Zealand spinners Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell tightened the screws, triggering a collapse that saw India lose three wickets for just seven runs. The visitors slipped from a comfortable position to 122/4 by the 11th over, with Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma falling while attempting to clear the expansive Hagley Oval boundaries.
With the required run rate climbing, captain Shreyas Iyer took control of the innings. A crucial reprieve in the 15th over, when Finn Allen dropped a difficult chance, allowed Shreyas to anchor the chase. With 55 runs required from the final 30 balls, Naman Dhir joined his captain and provided the necessary impetus. Dhir’s unbeaten 42 off 15 balls, combined with Shreyas’s 42, ensured India reached the target with two balls to spare.
New Zealand's formidable total
Earlier in the day, New Zealand posted a formidable 225/8, their highest T20I score on home soil and the joint-highest total ever recorded against India. Finn Allen set the tone with a punchy 45 off 24 balls, while Glenn Phillips provided the finishing flourish with an unbeaten 82 from 40 deliveries.
The Indian bowling attack struggled to contain the hosts throughout the innings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceded 49 runs in his four overs, while Axar Patel went for 51. Although Mayank Yadav and Arshdeep Singh managed to pick up wickets, New Zealand’s middle and lower order—bolstered by a 31-run cameo from Bevon Jacobs—ensured the visitors faced a record-breaking challenge. The two teams are scheduled to return to Hagley Oval on Saturday for the second match of the series.
