India has unveiled a 15-man squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, featuring the return of Jasprit Bumrah and Sanju Samson, while Hardik Pandya remains sidelined due to injury.

Jasprit Bumrah Returns as India Names Squad for Afghanistan T20I Series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has confirmed a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. The selection marks a shift toward a more experienced lineup following the recent tour of Zimbabwe, with star pacer Jasprit Bumrah headlining the list of returning players.

While the return of key personnel bolsters the side, the announcement also confirms that all-rounder Hardik Pandya will miss the series. Pandya, who has been working toward a return to competitive cricket, encountered a fresh setback involving a leg niggle while training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, effectively ruling him out of contention for the Afghanistan fixtures.

Squad Composition and Key Returns

Shreyas Iyer has been named to lead the side, with Tilak Varma serving as his deputy. The squad features a mix of established talent and emerging prospects, with Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan selected as the designated wicketkeeping options. The batting unit is further supported by Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube, and the young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who retains his spot after featuring in the Zimbabwe series.

The bowling attack sees the significant inclusion of Bumrah, who returns to the T20I setup after sitting out recent series against Ireland, England, and Zimbabwe. He is joined in the pace department by Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana. The spin options include Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi, while the all-rounder contingent is rounded out by Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Dube.

Fitness Status and Selection Changes

The BCCI has noted that the availability of Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Harshit Rana remains subject to final fitness clearances. This squad represents a notable departure from the group that traveled to Zimbabwe, with eight players from that tour—including Rinku Singh and Mayank Yadav—omitted from the current selection.

Hardik Pandya’s absence continues a period of inactivity for the all-rounder, who has not played competitive cricket since his appearance for the Mumbai Indians on May 24. His last international outing for India occurred during the T20 World Cup final on March 8. The selectors' decision to pivot back to a more experienced core suggests a strategic focus as the team prepares for the upcoming Afghanistan series.
